Winter's grip tightens on us in these December days, but I go in memory to a warm October day, when our Historical Society had its first heritage day celebration, honoring the Italian members of our community.

It was an opportunity to share in the history of these early Italian immigrants who came from a sunny land to Michigan's dramatically changing seasons. Some chose to farm and laboriously cleared the land of huge stumps left by the lumber barons. Others worked in the mines, but all contributed to the rich history that is our heritage.

Their music and humor formed a great part of their lives, and that was shared with us that day at the heritage center. Nostalgia touched us all, as we listened to the strong voices of the long-time members of our area sing in that melodious language that falls so softly on the ear . We closed the day with a feeling that we had shared in a proud and honorable history.

As our president, Ed Sandene, said: "This event was a part of the Historical Society's efforts to promote our rich heritage. The cultural and historical heritage we have is a unique blend of various ethnic groups and should not be lost. Hopefully, we can build on this and as more people get involved, the knowledge of this will grow."

And now, looking forward to the new year that lies before us, in the midst of our snow-clad bluffs, we wish you "Buon capo d'anno," and I add in the beloved language of my ancestors "Sto Lat"...may you have a happy hundred years.

Catherine McLean, vice-president
