Golden September gave us sunshine and good weather for our annual Bessemer birthday party. It was wonderful to see our honored guests (Mary Stempihar, Fran Malmberg (Catherine Martin), Rusty Wilson, Mary Turkal, Mary Kovacevich and Domenic Guglielmotto) seated together, and realize the great part of Bessemer's history they represented. Walt Rickard summarized the historical events that they had witnessed, and made us realize the history that had touched us all. Bill Elliott and Fred Tezak entertained the visitors with their outstanding playing, and honored many requests for old favorites. Joe Carlson added to the afternoon's entertainment by giving an excellent historical talk concerning his new book, "The Murder of Andrew Sigler". Another Autumn event was the well-attended annual meeting held at the Elk & Hound. Paul Sturgul, attorney and learned speaker, gave a presentation on the different ethnic groups, and the time periods when they emigrated to this area. We take this time, too, to thank all the volunteers and members, who through their efforts keep our organization the success that it is. And we thank the anonymous donors who so generously support us, and ask only that we continue to preserve the history of the Bessemer area. Looking ahead to next summer, we are asking for docents or greeters to fill the hours that we are open. If you can spare the time, please consider volunteering. You can contact us at 667-0743 or 667-4091. It can be a rewarding experience. Visitors, former residents and graduates from our schools stop in and share their memories and have interesting stories of their families, successes and undertakings in life. We wish all of you blessings in the New Year, and thank you for your support. Catherine McLean - Vice President |
