I mark the passing of our warm season by the wild flowers that bloom at the roadside as I walk, and the wild asters and black-eyed susans tell me of summer's departure. But it's warmth lingers, as do our memories of this "season in the sun." Our little town and surrounding communities united to bring the Vietnam memorial, The Moving Wall, to Bessemer. Thousands came to honor the fallen of our nation, and each of you who came to the field above our city streets took away a memory of that occasion. A memory that will dwell in your collection of unforgotten moments.      The memory that I will keep of that event will not only be of our aging veterans, in the hot sun, paying tribute to their fallen comrades with upright carriage and total attention, through the lengthy ceremonies, but also of the children and young adults who paid the same reverence and attention to this honoring of our nation's heroes. They, too, will carry a memory of this happening, adding, as we all do, to the memories of moments when life touched us in a special way in our time spent here. Our Heritage Center, with its artifacts and collection of written words, holds safe many of these memories for us, and we thank you, as always, for your support and encouragement in our efforts to preserve our past for the enrichment of the future.
