We’ve recently had requests to accept Military mementos, especially from WWll.

.  This prompted us to set up a section which will be devoted to this type of material. Items received to date are related to 2 local Navy veterans, and an army veteran.

One grew up in the Harding area of South Bessemer. His name was Sulo Soumi and he served on the cruiser SS Houston in the South Pacific. The ship was sunk and he was taken prisoner. He remained a Japanese prisoner of war for 3 years. As a prisoner he had worked on the bridge over the River Kwai and of course suffered the effects of 3 years of captivity. Included in the display is a letter from President Harry Truman.

The other Naval display is about a Bessemer serviceman who was a torpedo man serving on board a submarine. During the battle of the Java Sea the sub was sunk.  And he lost his life. Included in this display are 4 framed photos and other related material.

Another donation included miscellaneous articles which had belonged to an Army veteran. We thank the donors of these items for thinking of the Historical Society and will surely consider other similar memorabilia which is military related. Please contact us if you have any of this type of material. While we can’t display everything we would at least like to be considered.

As a reminder, we prefer donations as we do not like to take items on loan. A deed of gift is made out on which you can also list any conditions which you
may wish to include concerning the donation.
