The Birth of Bessemer

In 1884, Bessemer was platted by the railroad company and named after Sir Henry Bessemer, the inventor of the Bessemer Steel Process. Bessemer was originally part of Ontonagon County until 1887 when it became the county seat for Gogebic County.

On March 14, 1887, 360 citizens met in the Colby House and voted to organize Bessemer as a village. March 18 brought the first village meeting held in the Pecard Block and Martin Kallander was elected Village President.

In 1889, the Village of Bessemer was incorporated as the City of Bessemer. The first election was held on May 6, 1889.

In 1893, the Bessemer City Council decides to draft and prepare a special city charter. The charter was presented to the legislature and on February 13 the city was reincorporated and divided into five wards, two more than the previous three wards.

Today, in 2014, we continue to celebrate the birth of Bessemer as a city. The Bessemer Area
Historical Society remembers 125 plus years by preserving history in our museum and Heritage Center. An Open House with cake and coffee was held August 16th to celebrate the occasion.

Our Heritage Center has been busy all summer long with out-of-town guests as well as local history enthusiasts.
In June, we celebrated the dedication of the new Ethnic Commons Park. The turnout was great and everyone enjoyed seeing something new in Bessemer. The Fourth of July celebration brought in many visitors as usual. We received some new donations for our museum and helped a few individuals with their family research projects.

To keep up with the changing times, the Bessemer Area Historical Society now has a Facebook page. This page is full of pictures and facts pertaining to the history of Bessemer and surrounding areas. Our annual meeting is being held on September 13 and the Bessemer Pumpkinfest Celebration is early this year on September 27. We are looking forward to both events to round out a fantastic summer season.

Please feel free to contact us any time if you have any questions, comments, donations or would just like to give a helping hand.

The Smithsonian will have an exhibit displayed in the area  to be located  in the Downtown Art Place (DAP) in Ironwood.  The Theme of the exhibit is:
The Way We Worked. Along with it, our area History will be the focus of many local groups and people who will participate doing tours, displays, contests and more throughout the area. We would love to see as many people come to the area for this. So, plan now for a spring visit!
