June is here and it seems like summer has been here for a while because of our very and mild weather conditions this year. At the Historical Society, we are planning for another busy season. Again this year, we will be hosting the Competitive Art Show by the Range Art Association during the Fourth of July holiday.
We are expecting many visitors this summer as our website has been full of inquiries of families and former residents of the Bessemer area. Many individuals have stated they will be stopping by to visit the Heritage Center for information about their ancestors and the Bessemer area. With that being said, we are always looking for volunteers to work at the Heritage Center for a four-hour shift on a Friday or Saturday.
The interest of history on the Gogebic Range has really been on the uprise due to the projects taking place in the Ironwood area. Groups are working on a Miner’s Memorial Mural and a walking trail through one of Ironwood’s former mining areas. Hopefully, this will spur an interest toward the Bessemer area and allow us to welcome active participants within our society.
Our group here in Bessemer is currently working on a logo for the Historical Society. This logo will represent our organization and symbolize how the Bessemer area was founded. We would like to have this completed within the next few weeks.
We hope all of our out-of-town members traveling to Bessemer this summer will stop by for a visit at the Heritage Center and look forward to seeing you.
Finally, as we have just observed another Memorial Day and the theme for the Bessemer 4th of July Parade is “Celebrate Freedom,” please remember past and present members of the United States Armed Forces.
