Thomas Carlyle wrote: "By nature, man hates change; seldom
will he quit his old home till it has actually fallen around his ears." Such was the state of some of the old buildings in Bessemer. The Downtown Development Authority made the wise decision that they had to be removed, and three of them will soon be gone. Some of you will mourn them, but the majority of the residents will only feel relief at the improvement to our city. "This wind of change" will bring renewal to our community and we look forward to these betterments. These needed changes emphasize the importance of our Historical Society and Heritage Center. For there, our past is preserved, and our memories of these places can be recalled and recorded. We can have there the changeless sense of our beloved city. There, as Thomas Carlyle wrote "The true past departs not." Your membership, donations and support assure that the winds of change will not take away our heritage, and our gratitude goes out to you.
