The Bessemer Area Historical Society begins its’ eleventh year as an organized non-profit group that is dedicated to preserving the history of Bessemer as well as the surrounding Gogebic Range.
Our Heritage Center, located on Bessemer’s main street, has been filled with many donations from private individuals along with local business and organizations. The most recent sizeable donation was from the City of Bessemer and the City Library. Numerous books and other reading materials pertaining to local history were dropped off in January and the task of organizing these items is underway. One of the most impressive items is a huge hand-made book commemorating the dedication of the Memory Lane Roadside Park in 1949.
The 2013 Calendar Project was a big success and copies of the calendar were ordered and sent to all four corners of the United States. We still have copies available for purchase as gifts or Bessemer keepsakes.
Our website has been getting many requests from individuals tracing their family roots. In most cases, a grandchild is inquiring about information of their grandparents’ early lives in Bessemer and even requesting information on where they lived in the hope of visiting our area to see first-hand the stories brought down through the generations.
On January 5th, Ed Sandene and Dan Cvengros, along with Erwin Township Historian Ivan Hellen, were treated with a plane ride over Gogebic and Iron Counties. The purpose of the ride was to give advice to a local pilot that is interested in giving historic air tours of our area.
We continue to welcome all donations of family histories, pictures or historic items at our Heritage Center. Thank you to all who have donated in the past. Your kindness and generosity is appreciated and will be enjoyed for generations to come.
We also have our “We Remember” plaque honoring family and loved ones by donating funds to the History Society.
Stop in and see what’s new at the Heritage Center this summer and have a great 2013.
