Spring is here once again and the Heritage Center is busy preparing for another summer of visitors. The Historical Society has been working with the Bessemer Spartan Committee and the A.D. Johnston High School Art Department for the purpose of placing murals on the outside of the Heritage Center. The murals will be painted by the high school art class and will show the historic beginning of our area. Two murals will be worked on this year with more to follow next year. We are also working with the Spartan Committee to have historic banners placed along U.S. 2 in Bessemer. These projects will certainly capture an image of days gone by and enhance the City of Bessemer.

The Heritage Center now has new shelving on the north wall inside of the building thanks to some generous donations and great volunteers. This shelving will be used for the display of donated items and for our newly acquired ledgers. There are a total of 97 ledgers from the City of Bessemer and date back to 1890. Wow - what an addition! The ledgers will be useful for people to reference city businesses and ancestors’ history within Bessemer.

We had a great response to the request for high school yearbooks - many years were donated and we are very thankful for these. Come on in and browse and reminisce about your old school days. There are still some missing years so if you have one or more yearbooks to donate, please contact a society director to see if it is a year we could use.

Our new military display corner is slowly taking shape and we continue to ask for any stories or items pertaining to Bessemer or the local area. All of the Armed Forces will be archived in the Heritage Center for future generations to honor and enjoy.
As always, we are thankful for all of the donations of material, time and money that we receive. Any stewardship that one can give to the Bessemer Area Historical Society helps to preserve our local history for generations to come. If you are interested in volunteering or becoming a member, please contact any of our society directors.

Have a great summer in 2011.
Dan Cvengros, Vice-President BAHS
